The First Year Is Over! Happy Or Sad? Hmmmm...

Well, my first year is over, and I have alot to think about. I did well in some areas, but there's definately some improving to do. And since I'm a bum and don't want a job over summer, I'm going to focus my efforts on learning!

Firstly, I didn't do as well as I thought in my favourite unit, Typography. I fall flat when it comes to research and development (mainly because I don't even own a sketchbook! oops!). Sooo.... Here is some fabolous blogs, websites and articles about type - for my future reference!

I Love Typography!

This is a huge database of fonts (good and bad), articles, examples and blogs!

EXCESS

I had so many ideas for my excess project, and tried out a few which I will show below. Firstly an idea popped into my head for posters titled "too much of nothing" & "too much of something". I only made 2 which are below & decided I couldn't really experiment too much with them or take the idea much further.

"Too Much of Something"

"Too Much of Nothing"
Designed to be a double page spread in a book.

My 2nd idea was excess waste & pollution, and the consequences on the environment. I decided to do some hand-made posters out of paper/magazines/newspapers to demonstrate the idea of recylcling. I wanted to use things that already exist in the world rather than create something new. I have 2 part-made posters so far and many more ideas but struggles to make this idea meet one criteria of the brief - that it contain 500 words.

Without "TURN OFF THE LIGHTS" type, in spraypaint across top left corner. Designed to appeal to the target age range.

A recylcling sign I made out of images of nature I found in a wildlife magazine.

My third idea was "24 Hours of Wonder" which was based on the idea of knowing too much about someone. Is there such as thing as knowing too much? Or looking into someone too deeply? Is it better to say everything out loud or keep some things to yourself? In 24 hours I wrote down all the questions I asked myself in my head (not out loud, and questions only - not answers or statements). I learnt something about myself here and didn't leave any out even though there are some I wouldn't like people to read. Leaving some out would defeat the object of the project. And giving no answers sort of holds you back from getting to know me. It leaves the readers to create their own answers.
Some questions are very boring, e.g "what should i have for tea? chicken or soup? or chicken soup?". Some are a bit wierd, e.g. "I wonder how long that plant's been there?". And some are quite revealing about my personal life, e.g. "why is ella such a cunt?".

I picture something like this being exhibited in a room where the questions are everywhere, like you've walked inside my brain. I vision banners hanging from the ceiling, posters on the walls, text on the floor, objects and sculptures everywhere. I picture everything being made by hand by me, so it all gives a greater impact of knowing someone too deeply. I don't know if this is possible to do though but i love the idea!

Another idea I had to exhibit this work was to get people to write the questions all over my body and photograph it, and then exhibit the photographs. I like this idea but i think i would have to provide a list of questions so people can read exactly what's on there. Also i would have to be brave and wear very little (which is the way i vision it since it's supposed to be revealing) or wear a plain white t shirt and continue the writing onto that.

To go along side this i was tempted to write an explanation of some of the questions, really just to protect myself from people thinking I'm crazy, but that would take some of the mystery away from the work and defeat the object of it.

OBAMA INAUGURATION BADGES

Don't know if I spelt inauguration right, but these are badges made to commemorate America's 44th President, Barrack Obama. I designed a box to put them in so they can be posted. More explanation later! For now, here's the finished project:
