Formation

This poster is my experimentation of the formation of type. I've titled it "Fresh" because that's the word I've spelt out with strips of black card. I decided to make my poster 3D to push the boundaries of when you can label something as text. Some might say they don't see words but they see shapes or symbols.

Pictures of "Fresh":

My letter "e".

I inscribed text on the underside of come letters saying "still fresh" and other phrases.

Align Right

Can you see the letters F, R, E, S & H in there?

AUDIO / VISUAL Semester A

HERE'S A MASSIVE POST WITH ALL MY WORK FOR THIS UNIT:

The Dark Room

These are examples of my experimentation in the dark room. I exposed the images to light from my mobile phone. I can't remember how many seconds was best to expose them for but it was all trial and error, and these are the ones that worked. I laid things like newspaper, keys, elastic bands etc to get a sort of x-ray vision image of them.

.This is one of my favourites. It's done using lots of elastic bands. I like the effect it gave as it reminds me of electricity or energy. It seems alive and looks like it's glowing.

I like the one in the top right of this photograph. I laid coins down and created some really interesting patterns. The negative space makes it look like someone has munched into a black piece of paper. The glove in the bottom left is also interesting because it looks a bit alien. The fingers look really short like a childs; the shape isn't quite right.

COLOUR, FORM & MOVEMENT

This is a gorgeous example of colour. It was taken from my bedroom window at my mums house. I love winter mornings when everything is pale and soft. The colours here just make it look peaceful. I feel relaxed when I look at this (although that might be partly because it's my home). You can just see the outline of trees through the fog so you get some interesting shapes in the background.
I like the division of the frame in this photo. Two thirds of the image are divided by the pale grey fencing and the focus of this picture is the number 5 in the top right section on the image. I like the colours here because they aren't very bold. Because it was a very bright day everything seems brighter so the colours work together.

I took this picture while I was walking my dog. She ran into this patch of woods and I couldn't see her so I took a picture thinking the flash might show her up. This is the resulting photograph. I like how because it was getting dark a lot of light has fallen on the foreground but the background is pitch black. It gives depth to the image. It also makes the trees look a bit unreal I think, like they're made out of plastic.

This one reminds me of being on holiday, I think because of the sandy colour. Aswell as beaches, alot of buildings in countries such as italy and spain are pale colours and smooth not brick. A strip of light falls softly on the boxed intitials, giving shadows to the letters. When I look at this I wonder who wrote all those initials? What or who do they stand for? How long have they been there?
I like the movement of the water here. You can see lots of ripples that are quite soothing. The colour blue is soothing too. I like the division of the frame created by the pole of the sign. It divides the image in half and also the sign itself is a rusty orange, and just above the sign there are orange and brown trees. Below the sign the colours are cold (blue & grey) and above it they are warm.
This image is titled "Peeping" because the way the trees and grass crowd the corners it gives me the impression of someone crouching behind them peeping out. The angle is a bit off also, I tilted the camera to the side so it is slightly uncomfortable to look at. The colours are very dark and it's a dull day which adds some eeriness.

I like the shapes the arms of the trees create here. One in the top left corner looks like a circle, which is unusual for a tree branch. It's a peaceful image which bold earthy colours and light seeping through the trees. This (and a few of the other pictures) were taken in Twigmoor Woods near Scunthorpe.
Another from Twigmoor Woods. I love how dark this image has turned out because it contrasts with the light coming through the branches. It's peaceful like the image above but because it hasn't got the bright colours it seems peaceful in a sort of morbid way. It's a tight space with ling trees breaking up the frame into lots of sections.

Self - Portrait:

This is me and my mum walking my dog. When we were set the self portrait project I had already taken this photo. I was trying to take a picture of my dog but she ran out of the frame, so all i got was our shadows. I really love the fact that in winter you get really long shadows. Also how much can you learn about someone through their shadow? The element of colour is removed completely, all you have is the shape or outline. I included the picture of my mum ans myself because she is a big influence in my life and I'm lucy I have a great relationship with her. Also my dog is very important to me, she's like my baby (you can see her whizzing about in the top right corner).
This is the street I grew up on for most of my life. I think this shadow is in proportion because rather than stretching across the ground the wall provides a good surface for it. You can see more accurately what I look like in this photo than the one below.

This is a really long shadow which makes me look like I have legs 6 feet long. I included this is the project because I don't have a car in Lincoln so spend alot of time walking. This is the route I take to my boyfriends house, which I walk most days. He is one of the main people in my life and is studying in spain for 6 months, so this picture reminds me of him because I'd love for him to be within walking distance instead of across Europe.

This doesn't really reveal much about me but I like the composition of the photograph. My legs appear freakishly long and stretch out across the yellow grid. The shadow is quite soft here whereas in some of the other photos it is black. The paler shade of grey works nicely with the colour of the floor and the soft yellow.

MONTAGE

This is my favourite of my montage's. I only took a picture of this one before I handed them all in, so I don't have pictures of the other three. I did this work around the subject of 'Urban'. I'll explain the individual things I chose to 'shoot' out of the gun.

Firstly there's a broken CD. This is there because I was thinking about how powerful the media is, and how it's always growing. There are constantly new TV & radio channels, the internet is booming, the press, films music etc. All these industries are growing and I'm wondering when is it going to stop? What if it keeps getting larger and more influential in our lives? Media is a big part of most Urban life. Music in particular is important for me and that's why I chose the CD.

Second, theres a picture of a policeman's body and some 'police line do not cross' tape. These represent the state most people think our law enforcement is in. I think crime rates are stupidly high. You hear about it in the news all the time and most people have had some sort of crime committed against them (or maybe committed one themselves). In some urban areas crime is a normality because it happens so often.

Lastly theres the figure of a woman who appears to be made of melting metal. This is quite personal to me. I chose this because I come from a small town where everyone knows everyone. You recognise people wherever you go and feel you have your own place/identity there. Now I've moved to a city I feel strange seeing loads of people everywhere and knowing nothing about them. If you stand in Lincoln high street you see all these individuals blend into the crowd and they all seem to melt into one. I feel alot smaller living in a city and the woman in the montage represents me feeling like I want to be known and I want to stand out but I'm just one of a large mass of people. It's a change from what I'm used to so Urban areas scare me a bit (especially London - it's HUGE!).

Animation

STILLS FROM ANIMATIONS I'VE MADE:

Mountains:

I used the edges of sheets of paper to create the shape of mountains. I slowly moved the paper upwards to give the impression that the mountains are growing.

I then laid triangles of white paper on the peaks of the mountains to show they are freezing.
Then I cut out loads (and I mean hundreds) of circles of paper using a hole puncher and sprinkled them onto the mountains

I used the paper circles as snow so that when enough of them had fallen on the mountains the screen would be white again so the animation could be played on a continuous loop.
